February snows

On days when the wind is bearable we try to get outside and roam around. It is strange for us. Despite the awesome views from the house, we sometimes have to remind ourselves that we are staying in a wildlife refuge. That would be unheard of elsewhere. We are currently on the lookout for grey wolves, caribou (often the wolves are following the caribou), and whales. Even though the land looks like this - white, hard, and cold - we think we can feel spring in the air and we have read that spring brings massive numbers of whales and plenty of bears.

Virtually every walk out the door is partly occupied by sightings of sea ducks and gulls feeding, eagles and ravens soaring, and seals watching us. River otters, a Peregrine falcon, the foxes, song birds, shore birds and sea otters are seen regularly. And rarely do we see an orca, sea lions, or caribou.
